Step 1

Here we go. The first of hopefully many posts to come. I’ve toyed with the idea of starting a blog for a long time but it took a recent trip to London to really give me the kick in the pants I needed to get this up and running. And here I am, up and running. πŸ™‚

So why am I here? What have I got to say? Why do you really care? Well, maybe you don’t. But the point of me sitting here, somewhat exhausted after a long day at work typing out what sounds like a rambling stream of consciousness, is to take the time to think more critically about my personal journey with health and nutrition. The key words here being “personal” and “journey” because I haven’t quite figured it all out yet.

I’ve made a serious commitment the last couple of years to refocus my energies into creating and maintaining a healthy lifestyle with an emphasis on food, nutrition, and exercise. So I’ve lost some weight and I eat more balanced meals that actually make me feel good. It’s been amazing and life-changing. But there’s also been a lot of struggle and confusion with what I consider to be a healthy mental attitude in conjunction with the physical. How do I reconcile what someone like Michael Pollen advocates (“Eat Food. Not Too Much. Mostly plants.”Β In Defense of Food)Β with a more complicated approach that emphasizes the science behind food? I agree with both in different degrees, but how much can we simplify our food choices when our markets are painfully lacking in good ol’ produce? And really, who wants to sit and stare at Nutrition Fact charts all day and breaking down everything on our plates into protein, fiber, and carbs?? Then there’s the diet industry, body image, the role of media, access to healthy food resources within cities and beyond, diabetes, eating disorders….the list goes on and on.

I’m here to try and make sense of it all. If not for you, the reader, then for me, the writer. It was a process for me to stop unhealthy habits and it continues to be a process for me to keep a positive energy that’s focused on health and not on size. So to will it be a process for me to discern just what I think are the best practices to having a more nutritious and balanced lifestyle that won’t make me obsessive compulsive. It’s a passion for me to speak to others on similar journeys and who are equally as devoted to nutrition and health. I want to hear your ideas, get feedback from anyone who has an opinion on what I’ll post here and really make this as interactive as possible.
